What exactly does "Añejo" mean?
"Añejo" translates to "old" or "aged" in Spanish. In the tequila industry, it refers to a specific class of spirit that has been matured in oak barrels for a minimum of one year and a maximum of three years.
How does Añejo differ from Reposado?
It is all about the time in the wood. Reposado ("rested") is aged for 2 to 12 months, resulting in a lighter color and a balance of agave and oak. Añejo is aged longer (up to 3 years), creating a darker, richer, and much smoother spirit where the barrel notes are more dominant.
What is the best way to drink Añejo Tequila?
Because of its complexity, Añejo is best enjoyed neat or on a single large ice rock. Using a tulip-shaped glass or a snifter allows the aromas of vanilla and caramel to concentrate, providing a sensory experience similar to drinking a fine Cognac.
