What makes Tequila "Extra Añejo"?
To be classified as Extra Añejo, the tequila must be aged in oak containers with a maximum capacity of 600 liters for a minimum of three years. This long duration allows the spirit to absorb maximum flavor and color from the wood.
Does Extra Añejo taste like Bourbon or Scotch?
Because it is aged in oak (often charred), it shares many characteristics with fine whiskey—notes of caramel, vanilla, tobacco, and spice. However, the underlying cooked agave flavor remains, providing a unique vegetal sweetness that distinguishes it from grain-based spirits.
How should I drink Extra Añejo Tequila?
These are sipping tequilas. To fully appreciate the complex aromatics, serve it neat at room temperature in a glencairn glass or a snifter. Adding ice is not recommended as it can mute the delicate secondary flavors developed during the years of aging.
Why is Extra Añejo more expensive?
The higher price reflects the cost of storage, the quality of the oak barrels, and the "Angels' Share"—the portion of the spirit lost to evaporation over three or more years. Furthermore, the master distiller must carefully monitor the aging process to ensure the wood doesn't overwhelm the agave.
