Tokaj and Beyond: The Diversity of Hungary

Hungary's crown jewel is undoubtedly the Tokaj region. Famous for Tokaji Aszú—the botrytized dessert wine Louis XIV called "the wine of kings"—the region is now equally famous for its Dry Furmint. These dry whites are prized by connoisseurs for their high acidity, intense minerality, and notes of quince and pear. At WineToShip, we specialize in these volcanic whites that offer a unique alternative to Riesling or Chablis.

On the red wine front, Hungary offers powerful, sun-drenched selections. Explore Egri Bikavér, also known as "Bull's Blood," a complex blend from Eger that combines spice and structure. For those who prefer bold, Bordeaux-style reds, the Villány region in the south produces world-class Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Whether you are seeking a sweet nectar for a celebration or a savory red for your next dinner party, our Hungarian selection brings the soul of the Carpathians to your table.

Hungarian Wine Guide & FAQ

What are "Puttonyos" in Tokaji wine?

In Tokaji Aszú production, Puttonyos indicate the level of sugar and concentration. Historically, it referred to the number of baskets (puttony) of noble-rot grapes added to a barrel of base wine. Today, it ranges from 3 to 6 Puttonyos—the higher the number, the sweeter and more concentrated the wine.

What does Dry Furmint taste like?

Dry Furmint is a powerful white wine with high acidity and a distinct "smoke and stone" minerality from volcanic soil. Expect flavors of green apple, citrus, and ginger. It is often compared to a cross between a dry Riesling and a Chenin Blanc.

What is Bull's Blood (Egri Bikavér)?

Egri Bikavér is Hungary’s most famous red blend. Legend says it gave 16th-century Hungarian soldiers the strength to fight off the Ottoman Empire. Modern Bull's Blood is a high-quality blend of at least three grapes (usually including Kékfrankos), offering dark fruit, spice, and balanced tannins.

What food pairs best with Tokaji?

Sweet Tokaji Aszú is the ultimate match for Foie Gras, Blue Cheese (like Roquefort), and fruit-based desserts. Dry Furmint pairs excellently with roasted poultry, creamy mushroom dishes, and spicy Asian cuisine.
